What is hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is often referred to as pigmentation. Pigmentation is when patches of skin appear darker than the rest of the skin. Skin gets its colour from a cell known as a melanocyte, which produces a pigment called melanin. Pigmentation disorders can look like darkened patches or spots on the skin of various sizes that make the skin tone uneven.
What causes hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is caused by a variety of different factors, from genetics to sun exposure. In most cases hyperpigmentation is caused by prolonged sun exposure. The skin becomes damaged, unhealthy and inflamed, which affects and increases the melanin production resulting in an uneven skin tone.
