What is inner thigh fat?

Inner thigh fat refers to pockets of fat in between the top of your thighs. Often this can lead to your inner thighs touching which can affect our self-esteem, the way our clothes fit and sometime lead to rubbing together which can become painful.

What causes inner thigh fat?

Inner thigh fat can be the result of either weight gain, genetics, age or hormonal changes. Inner thigh fat is often stubborn and doesn’t go away with just diet and exercise. The shape of our thighs is not always something we can change. Exercise and diet will help with the amount of fat around our thighs, but not always change the shape of them. It can become frustrating if we eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly and we still don’t see the shape we are aiming for.

The Thigh Contouring Programme – Aftercare for Thigh Fat Removal

There are two types of fat in the legs: subcutaneous and intramuscular fat.

The Thigh Contouring Program involves removing subcutaneous fat as well as a plan for aftercare including diet and exercises to maintain the results as well as enhance them.

Subcutaneous fat is above the muscles, the fat you can squeeze and pinch. To maintain and improve the shape once we remove this fat is through diet to minimize the intramuscular fat. No treatment nor surgical procedure can reduce this type of fat. So this is where maintenance and aftercare come in.

We recommend minimising or eliminating starchy foods and sugar as well as incorporating healthy complex carbs and lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and protein. We try to keep nutrition simple so it is realistic and sustainable. It’s not about just a diet to lose weight, but rather creating a healthy lifestyle. We also tell our clients to always carry a bottle of water and try to drink 1.5 to 2 litres a day. This will also help improve your lymphatic system to reduce dehydration which can lead to swelling in the legs. Water will also help speed up your results as the fat cells are metabolised through your lymphatic system. The other key element of the program is to strengthen and tone the muscles so that once we remove the fat, we enhance the contour.

We recommend certain exercises to tone your muscles but not bulk up. It is important to incorporate both aerobic, anaerobic and weight-bearing exercises.

Aerobic activities that will help burn intramuscular fat are walking, biking and running. You want to get your heart rate up to around 70% of your maximum heart rate (calculate your maximum heart rate by subtracting your age from 220). You should ideally do this 4-5 times a week for 30-45 minutes.

Anaerobic activities are also helpful. A good option is HIIT training. These are short bursts of energy for shorter periods like Jump Squats and Burpees.

Try to incorporate weight-bearing exercises:

Walking lunges:

Stand with your feet hip feet hip-width apart. If you want to use weights, you can hold a small weight in each hand.
Lunge forward with your left leg and make sure your knee doesn’t go past your toes. Your right knee should go down until your knee is about an inch off the ground.
Continue doing this while alternating legs. Do 3 sets of 10-15 times per leg and rest between sets.

Sumo Squats:

Stand with your legs far apart with your toes pointed outward.
Slowly lower into a low squat. Keep your hands on your hips to balance. You can even hold small weights.
Slowly rise back up while squeezing your gluteus muscle, and slightly tuck your hips under.
Do 3 sets of 10 to 15.

Inner thigh leg lift:

Lie on the ground on your left side with your upper back off the ground and rest your upper body on your elbow.
With your legs straight, point your left toe and slowly raise your left leg upwards as high as you can until you can raise it any higher. Feel your inner thigh muscles contracting.
Repeat this 15 times or until you can’t do any more, then switch to your right side.
Do 3 sets on each leg.
