What is dullness?

Dullness essentially refers to lack of radiance or inability to reflect light well. Dull skin may appear dry, patchy, ashy or have an uneven texture.

What causes dullness?

There are a few reasons why skin may appear dull and lacklustre. Below are a few of the most common ones and their reasons why:

Dehydration: if the outermost layer of the epidermis doesn’t contain enough water, skin will lose elasticity and feel rough to the touch. Drinking plenty of water will help boost hydration from below your skins surface, reducing these symptoms.
Build up of dead skin cells: your skin naturally sheds away dead cells on a regular basis to make way for the new cells. But sometimes they don’t shed as they should and build up on the surface of the skin, resulting in uneven skin texture which decreases the reflection of light resulting in dullness.
Dryness: especially during winter months, where it’s cold outside and the heating is on inside. Heat and cold combined can take the moisture out of the air and your skin resulting in dry and dull skin.
Smoking: smoking can impair the production of collagen and elastin fibres and connective tissues in your skin. Smoking also increases oxidative stress in your skin as there is less oxygen in your blood, resulting in dullness and premature ageing.
