What is Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that affects both children and adults. It causes spotty, oily and sensitive skin. Acne scarring is a result of the Acne breaking down and leaving a pock like mark on the skin where the Acne pustule was. Acne can present itself most commonly on the face, 15% of people on the chest and half that suffer from face Acne suffer with back Acne also. There are six main types of spot caused by Acne:

Blackheads – which are small black or yellowish bumps that develop on the skin (they aren’t filled with dirt, but are black because the inner lining of the hair follicle produces colour).
Whiteheads – which have a similar appearance to blackheads, but may be firmer and will not empty when squeeze.
Papules – small red bumps that may feel tender or sore.
Pustules – similar to papules, but have a white tip in the centre, caused by a build up of pus.
Nodules – which are large hard lumps that build up beneath the surface of the skin and can be painful.
Cysts – which are large pus-filled lumps that look similar to boils and carry the greatest risk of causing Acne scarring.

Acne scars look like shallow, mottled depressions on the face, similar to a chicken pox mark.

What causes Acne?

Acne is caused when your hair follicles become blocked with excess sebum (oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands). This substance, when over produced, can trigger a build up of bacteria which causes inflammation, blocking the follicles. The main cause of Acne is due to hormonal changes in the body, certain medications and lifestyle choices can also assist in an Acne flair up. Acne scars form when the spots swell, causing a break in the follicle wall and collapse into itself leaving a shallow scar.
