Cryolipolysis, also known as Fat Freezing, came to the U.K. in 2021. Marlow Face & Body started offering CoolTech Fat Freezing in 2014. We grew from the success we have had treating thousands of people over the years.
We are extremely passionate about the treatment, the technologies we use, and helping our clients achieve the goals they can’t always reach through diet and exercise. A lot of technologies have come and gone, especially over the last decade. Very few have stood the test of time.
What is Fat Freezing?
Calliopsis, also known as Fat Freezing is a safe and effective way to eliminate stubborn areas of fat by freezing and destroying the fat cells.
During a treatment, a protective gel pad is placed over a selected area, a handpiece then suctions the fatty tissue into an applicator which is shaped to contour the area. The cooling plates inside the handpiece begin to cool and go down to a very specific controlled temperature. The temperature does not damage the surrounding tissues. Depending on the device, the treatment can last anywhere from 35 to 70 minutes. When the treatment finishes, the handpiece is removed, and the fat is frozen solid.
The fat cells take 2-3 days to die, this is called Apoptosis (natural cell death). Two weeks later, your body will identify the dead fat calls as a toxin and will begin to slowly and gradually metabolise them. The fat cells are eliminated through your urine. Eliminating 100% of the cells can take up to 6 months, but the peak of the results are seen at 3 months. The fat cells are removed from your body, so the results can be as effective as liposuction.
How was Fat Freezing Discovered?
Fat Freezing was discovered in 1970 when scientists wanted to understand why children were developing dimples in their cheeks from continuously sucking on ice lollies.
The fat cells in their cheeks were dying due to prolonged exposure to freezing tempatures, this was called “popsicle pannicultis”. Over the course of the next ten yesrs, scientists at Harvard university discovered a way to harness the science and develop a safe way to utilise the concept to safely destroy fat cells in targeted areas of the body. They needed to be able to do this safely without damaging the surrounding tissues, such as the skin, vascular system and muscles.
By 2009, they had developed the technology to selectively freeze and destroy targeted fat cells, and this called “Cryolipolysis”. This was when coolsculpting was released and received FDA approved.
