Review: Fat busting at Marlow Face + Body

By Hero Brown
Muddy Stilettos – 19.8.20

Fancy freezing off some fat? I know just the place! I’ve tried out the new CoolTech DEFINE technology at super-chic Marlow Face + Body – the only place to offer it in the UK. Here’s the Muddy verdict.

THE LOCATION

Ooh, it’s discreet! As you might well want it to be if you’re taking advantage of Marlow Face + Body’s raft of medi-led procedures, from the usual injectables (euphemistically described as ‘wrinkle relaxing’) and lunch-hour non-invasive ‘facelifts’ to the latest laser acne treatments. With its own car park away from, but close to, the high street, the entrance to these super-stylish doctor led medical aesthetic clinic is a simple door. Marlow Face + Body launched in 2014 and over time has gained a real reputation in the town amongst the monied beauty seekers for its cutting-edge treatments and slick service.

THE VIBE

Like Elle Deco just landed and sprinkled interiors fairy dust everywhere. Urbane but comfy, like your best friend’s cooler, tidier house, with its slouchy sofas, and good taste everywhere from the Missoni cushions in the consultation rooms and the modern art on the walls, to the huge statement fireplace. It hits the right note between luxe and relaxed. I’m struggling to think of a more stylish alternative anywhere in Bucks.

THE THERAPIST

Owner Elizabeth Bester is the main therapist for non-medical contouring treatments, and is a real force of nature, a real Canadian charmer who is her own best advert – all glowed-up skin, toned arms and teeny weeny hips, and the kind of warm energy I’m not sure I even had pre-kids. Annoyingly you can’t even dislike her, she’s too disarming and friendly – but when it gets to the nitty gritty of treatment time, she’s reassuringly professional. Her background is 17 years in fitness, nutrition and personal training so it’s safe to say she has more than a faddy interest in the body beautiful.

THE TREATMENT

As with the rest of the beauty industry it’s been a torrid few months for Face + Body but my sense is that the kind of treatments on offer here and the level of investment may give it the edge over the competition – the doctors on staff, for example, are both hospital consultants, and the tech is bang up to the minute – Marlow Face + Body is still the only clinic in the UK to offer CoolTech define, the treatment I tried pre lockdown (!) and have had to wait until now to publish.

CoolTech is designed to reach the fat reserves that exercise, diet or age can’t reach – the areas that won’t firm up no matter how hard you work at it. And they do it by, well, freezing it basically. The fat pocket is suctioned into a the CoolTech handpiece and then radically cooled to destroy the fat cells. Then over the next 6-12 weeks the cells metabolise as normal and are naturally removed from the body.

The big calling card for CoolTech is two-fold – the results, claiming a 60% reduction versus competitors’ 25% reduction; and also the time it takes, as it can be a single treatment of 70 minutes versus many repeat visits. Think of it like a chilly non-invasive liposuction.

Let me say from the off that this is definitely not a comfortable or ‘I may fall asleep’ relaxing treatment – Elizabeth had a good exploratory squeeze of my thighs to work out where exactly to attach the fat suckers for maximum effect (hey, just make it everywhere) , and then of course it’s initially bloody freezing. But after five minutes everything went numb, and I busied myself by sending emails on my phone, listening to music and zoning out while the machine went to work. Had I wanted to, there were also movies to watch. Taking 70 minutes out of my day for enforced stillness was almost a pleasant experience. (I did say almost).

Once my time was up and the machine beeped and my suckers were removed, there was a strange five minutes where Elizabeth enthusiastically massaged my flesh back to life – it was kind of an outer body experience as my thighs were frozen cold and pink like chicken fillets. Job done and life coming back to the limbs, I slipped on my jeans, said my thanks, and off I went. It was all remarkably easy really.

And the results? Well it definitely worked. In the interests of a robust test I continued eating and pigging out as usual, but after 8 weeks I could see less ripples on my silhouette (no you can’t see any images, I’m way too vain). There was a lot of me to suction but I imagine someone slimmer, with more stubborn areas, might benefit even more.

Worth mentioning that CoolTech isn’t confined to the usual trouble areas of thighs and stomach – it can also do chins (mmm, tempting), knees, bra-line and for men, pecs.

THE COST

Pricy, no two ways about it. A single treatment costs £600 (they’ll do your chin at the same time for an extra £400 if that clinches it), and depending on your physiology, the area to zap and the results required you might need several. But if you’ve spent the last 10 years spending £500 each January on gym membership you haven’t used or are considering the excruciating costs and dangers of liposuction you could argue this is a smart, cost-effective, and discreet way to get results.

Body contouring is a term we see all over the place these days, but what does it actually mean?

Body contouring is term used to describe creating desirable shapes on the body. You can do this by having a fat reduction treatment like CoolTech Fat Freezing or Alma Accent Prime to reduce stubborn fat on your hips or love handles to create a smoother more feminine contour.

Let’s use “Thighs” as an example. I had client who was an avid gym goer, had a healthy diet but just couldn’t shift an extra fatty layer on her thighs. She was determined to expose the contours of her muscles, see a gap between her inner thighs from the top all the way down to her knees, she wanted a discernible dip and contour between her bum and the top of her hamstring and overall to just have thinner leaner thighs.

During her consultation, I could feel soft fat on various areas including inner thighs, backs of thighs, front top of thighs and inside the knees. We decided to begin a program treating all various areas and created new contours all over her thighs. She knew the contouring she wanted and we gradually carried CoolTech fat freezing as well as Alma Accent Prime ultrasound over a few months and managed to completely contour new shapes to her thighs leaving her with thinner sculpted lean thighs. Hence…..Body Contouring.

Fat Freezing (also known as Cryolipolysis) is the process of controlled cooling of subcutaneous fat. This results in destroying the fat cells which are subsequently metobolised through your lymphatic system.

Let’s break that down a little further:

First you are assessed by an accredited and properly trained practitioner. They will let you know if you’re a good candidate for fat freezing. Is the fat soft or hard? Soft fat is known as subcutaneous and it the ideal type of fat for fat freezing. Hard fat is most likely Visceral fat (underneath the muscle) and is not suitable for fat freezing.

Is your BMI within a healthy range? And lastly, the practitioner will make you sure you don’t have any contraindications.

Next, the practitioner will take photos to document your “before” body.

Next, a gel pad which is coated in an antifreeze gel, will be placed over the area to protect your skin. The the machine handpiece is placed on your body and will gently suction your fat in to the cavity of the handpiece. The cooling will begin and last between 60-70 minutes, but no less than 60 minutes.

Once the handpiece is removed, the fat is often quite solid and the practitioner will massage it until it’s soft again.

Over the next 2 days the fat cells *will go through a process called Apoptosis (natural gradual cell death) and your lymphatic system will identify them as toxin and begin to metabolise them at around *2 weeks. Your body will continue expelling the dead cells for *up to 6 months, with the peak of your results showing *between week 8-12.

If your practitioner recommended more than one fat freezing treatment during your assessment, you will return for your second treatment at around 6 weeks after your first fat freezing treatment.

Around 8-12 weeks after your last treatment, you will return to have your “After” images taken to see your results.

*Results may vary from person to person.

There has been so much hype in the media about Fat Freezing and personal accounts of people describing their own experience of how it worked, if it worked and how happy they are with their results.

Fat Freezing (also know as Cryolipolysis) is a proven science. It was discovered at Harvard University by a group of scientists who wanted to understand why children were developing dimples after constantly eating ice lollies. They discovered that fat cells were dying (scientifically known as Apoptosis: natural gradual cell death) after direct exposure to freezing temperatures for a certain length of time.

The concept was harnessed in to an FDA approved treatment called Coolsculpting® by an American company called Zeltiq. A few years later, Cocoon Medical (a Spanish company who are leaders in surgical & non-surgical aesthetic technology) released CoolTech® with clinically proven results of *25%-40% fat reduction with each treatment. The difference with CoolTech® compared to Coolsculpting®, is that CoolTech® has 2 handpieces so you can treat 2 areas at a time and is usually 1/2 to 1/3 of the cost of Coolsculpting®.

As a consumer, it’s tempting to go for cheaper alternatives (Lipoglaze, 3D Lipo, etc.) but please do your research. Unless the actual brand of technology has clinically proven results, there is no guarantee you will see any results or if the machine has been through any type of health & safety compliance. Scarily, anyone can buy one of these cheaper machines off the internet and start carrying treatments with no training & no malpractice insurance.

Fat Freezing does work, and is an amazing fat reduction alternative to surgery. Just make sure you find a clinic like Marlow Face + Body that uses a clinically proven brand of technology like CoolTech®.

Marlow Face & Body has officially launched Sinesculpt: a clinically proven natural weight loss supplement.

After 2 clinical studies, *the average weight loss is 5.6kg and 22% of your body fat in 90 days.

Sinesculpt contains a combination of citrus extracts to create a synergy of bioactive polyphenols which cause Lipolysis – breakdown of Adipocytes (fat cells) and other lipids by hydrolysis to release Free Fatty Acids & Glycerol.

Essentially draining the fatty acids from the fat cells and thereby reducing the overall size and measurements. It also contains a natural caffeine from Guarana which helps speed up the metabolism and expel the FFA’s (Free Fatty Acids).

Sinesculpt was founded by the team at Marlow Face & Body and Dr. Mariette Grant with a Masters in Obesity Management. As a private medi-spa, they were looking to incorporate a supplement which would help enhance the results of their body contouring & fat reduction treatments. Sinesculpt has proven to be an effective addition to their body contouring programs as well as an independent weight loss solution.

These days, it seems everyone is at it: a little baby Botox here; a sprinkling of filler there. And with celebrities finally coming clean about having these “minor procedures”, they have become both acceptable and “normal”. So much so that it is now a billion-pound industry, with non-surgical options like dermal fillers, Botox and laser hair removal accounting for nine out of ten cosmetic procedures in the UK. Yet while cosmetic surgery is regulated in this country, certain non-surgical procedures are not subject to any controls.

At present, the filler is not licensed, which means anyone can administer it. In other words, a beauty therapist, hairdresser or other laypeople – perhaps with minimal training– can buy the stuff on the Internet and set up a “clinic” at home. Botox is medically regulated but still, people manage to get it illegally and inject it.

The Government is reluctant to step in to control what has become a booming industry, so if you are contemplating having one of these treatments it is vital to know who you can turn to for advice on how to do so safely. After all, we have all probably seen or read of horror stories.

In 2013 the Review of the Regulation of Cosmetic Interventions, chaired by NHS medical director Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, called for better regulation of the industry – including surgical and non-surgical procedures – better training and proper redress if things go wrong. It also recommended the establishment of an independent body to assess and register fully trained medical aesthetic practitioners, but the Government has yet to put this in place. That is why the industry has stepped in, setting up Save Face, a voluntary regulatory body of accredited doctors, nurses and dentists who fulfil strict criteria. Safe, impartial and accessible, Save Face covers Botox and fillers, lasers, radiofrequency and IPL, sclerotherapy, chemical peels and cryolipolysis (using extremely low temperatures to destroy fat cells). It has the backing of Dr Christian, who’s keen to help raise awareness of the register and encourage more aesthetic medical experts to join.

Saveface.co.uk register is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority. It’s recognised by the Government, the Department of Health and NHS England.

Marlow Face and Body is an accredited Save Face practitioner.

Like many women my age, after two children, I’ve seen the fat on my love handles and stomach creep up over time. I watch what I eat, but I have a busy work schedule and liposuction is not an option. I decided on a non-surgical option. I tried everything from cavitation to fat freezing to radio frequency…you name it I’ve done it!! Because there are so many choices, you have to do your research.

I spent hundreds and had minimal results. But after a long journey, I discovered that there are machines out there that REALLY WORK!! The only way to be sure I could expect big results came down to choosing technology brands with CLINICALLY PROVEN RESULTS. After weeks of investigating, I decided on CoolTech for fat freezing (made in Spain, with proven results of up to 40% permanent fat reduction) and Alma Accent XL radio frequency for the skin tightening (FDA approved, proven results for wrinkle reduction, skin tightening and cellulite reduction). Next, I needed to find the right clinic and I came across Marlow Face + Body. They have both machines in a private home which meant the prices were less than half of what I would have paid in other mediclinic’s. I made sure they have malpractice insurance and were Save Face accredited (an independent organization that visit clinics and assess the environment, the technology, and the practitioners’ accreditations).

So I arranged a free consultation. When I arrived to the unsuspecting Marlow Bottom home, I was greeted by a warm and friendly Canadian, Elisabeth Bester. Elisabeth took me upstairs to her treatment room. It was like walking into some big chic modern spa with fluffy white towels and pillows, beautiful furniture and a big TV on the wall. Completely unlike the cramped little clinic rooms I’d been in before.

I told Elisabeth about my history of unsuccessful treatments and she talked me through what I could expect from CoolTech and Alma Accent XL. She showed me before and after images and some of them seemed too good to be true, but I felt very confident in Elisabeth and with all my research.

I completed two programs on both machines. The experience of the CoolTech Fat Freezing was very bearable. I almost fell asleep! I definitely had tender skin afterwards but I was able to get on with my life. The four sessions Alma Accent were actually a pleasant experience of a warming sensation.

I have finally reached a point where I am happy with my body. I lost 7 inches around my waist! My trousers are comfortable and my shape is much more feminine and contoured. The skin feels tight and smooth. I can’t wait to do my thighs next!

Fat Freezing has become so popular, that you can find it in nail salons for £75, or at a high-end clinics for £1,000, and they all promise the same benefits: “Freeze & destroy fat permanently”.

Fat Freezing is a non-invasive, safe and effective method to reduce stubborn areas of fat, as long you go to a reputable clinic with clinically proven technology. Cheaper options often lead to wasting time, money or ending up with serious injuries.

How to spot low-end fat freezing machines:

Anyone can buy cheap fat freezing machines off the internet, but you’ll probably need 4-5 treatments to see any results at all. These types of machines have no clinical tests, are usually made in China and don’t meet European health & safety standards. Ask the clinic what brand of machine they use, and do your research.

Another machine know to be less effective is the “All-in-one” with Fat Freezing, Radio Frequency and Cavitation. All 3 treatments require different mechanisms and are ultimately different types of technology so each one is compromised and you aren’t likely to get the results you’re hoping for, if any.

Choosing safe & effective Fat Freezing:

Make sure the brand of technology has clinically proven results. Clinical studies prove its safety, efficacy and results.

One leading clinically proven brand is CoolTech® with *proven results of up to 40% fat reduction.

Choosing a safe fat freezing clinic:

Use Save Face – government-accredited organization that assess the environment, technology and practitioners. Go to www.saveface.co.uk to find an accredited local clinic such as Marlow Face and Beauty.

Fat Freezing is safe, effective and a wonderful replacement for cosmetic surgery. Just look for: clinically proven machines + accredited clinics = getting the results you want.
